Powering a tent or RV air conditioner

A portable air conditioner is only useful if the pitch or vehicle can power it. This guide covers campsite hook-ups, generators, 12 V options and the start-up current that catches first-time buyers out.

Campsite hook-ups

EU and UK campsite hook-ups are normally 230-240 V at 6 A or 16 A. Confirm the site amperage before selecting a model, because a unit that draws more than the supply allows will trip the post.

  • Compact units draw roughly 400-700 W
  • Mid-size camping units 700-1,200 W
  • Always check the hook-up rating, not just the voltage

Generators

Off-grid users run an AC unit from a small generator. Size the generator for the unit’s start-up current, which is several times the running current for the first second, not for the running watts alone.

12 V and battery banks

Compact DC units can run from a 12 V or 24 V battery bank through a suitable inverter. AC units generally need a hook-up or a generator because start-up current is too high for a small battery alone.

Voltage and market

Voltage, plug type and frequency are configured at assembly for the destination market — Type F for the EU, Type G for the UK, Type I for AU / NZ and Type A/B for North America. Tell us where the unit will be used and we set it.

Start-up (locked-rotor) current is the figure that trips breakers. Size supply and cabling for that, not the running wattage.

Frequently asked questions

Will a camping air conditioner run from a battery?

Compact DC models can run from a 12 V or 24 V battery bank through a suitable inverter. AC units generally need a campsite hook-up or a generator because start-up current is several times the running current.

What campsite amperage do I need?

EU and UK hook-ups are typically 6 A or 16 A at 230-240 V. Confirm the site rating before choosing a model so the unit does not trip the supply.

How big a generator do I need?

Size it for the start-up current, which is several times the running current for the first moment, not the running watts alone.

Can you configure voltage for my market?

Yes. Voltage, plug type and frequency are set at assembly — Type F for the EU, Type G for the UK, Type I for AU / NZ, Type A/B for North America.

Why does my breaker trip on start-up?

The compressor draws several times its running current for a moment at start-up. Size the supply and cabling for that locked-rotor current, not the running wattage.
